COMFORT AND JOY
Last year I donated a few hundred cat and dog toys to a local rescue shelter. There was so much more I wanted to do but very little time or resources for me to be able to do more. I donated toys because I couldn't do anything else. The lady from the shelter called me at work and asked if I could do it again. She said that while many of the animals didn't get new homes they were at least comforted by having a personal item as a comfort while they awaited potential adoption. Catnip mice, jingle balls, chewie bones. Just something to make them feel less caged, less alone, less bored and scared.
This is allot to ask and I am only going to do so because for some reason I think the bulk of my neighbors have at least several pets and I see nothing but the greatest love for these little critters on here than I see elsewhere.
my hope:
I don't buy the fancy, expensive things. I go to the dollar store and try to get as many as I can. A busy ball or a nip mouse for each of them means more than a large showy item for one. I am asking for people to e-mail me and I will send you my address so that you can mail your care package to me directly. I already have a pile started and this particular shelter needs the help more than most. They have had to stop taking in new animals until some more are adopted out. One thing that helps adoption is a more well adjusted, socialized animal and if they play or are entertained they are cuter when people go for adoptions. When they see them bouncing a ball around or playing they see how cute and lovable they are and take a quicker interest in them and they adopt out faster. Of course they need money, food, all that stuff but she said the thing that made the most difference last year was the personal items for the adoptees. It made them feel better.
I am e-mailing this to my neighborhood and if you have a few spare minutes to mail it to your neighbors I might just be able to get to another shelter also. Put it up for
[this is good] so more people see it and perhaps respond. I don't often ask for many things but when the lady called me and told me what a difference it made I thought why not do something that actually makes a difference. So if you are interested in helping I will send you my address. I know that seems risky but I feel the benefit outweighs the risk. Let's give these little fella's some comfort and joy and celebrate the true meaning of the season. Don't worry if you can't. I have a good start already and I plan on placing bins around work to see what I can come up with. Nobody else can speak for them. They have no mommy or daddy or grandma to buy them a toy. They will be fortunate to survive. Comfort and Joy. May you each have plenty this holiday season and be proud of all that you share on behalf of others.
If anybody has any pull with Vox perhaps they could put something out there to help with this endeavor. I also had people offer money so if you want the name of the shelter I can send you their name to address a check to. Or I can give you their address and you can send it yourself directly to them. I wanted to start early because last year I only left myself a few weeks to get this going. I decided to this this each year to remember my best boy Gully when he's not here any more. So if you can help a little it would be great. I know that most folks are overburdened this time of year so any response will still be a good one.
Thanks,
Myke
