Imagine finding out your spouse died while watching the evening news......

How horrible. This is really sad.
That's horrible. It's sad to think that this type of situation happens to thousands of Americans every year. Thanks for sharing the video.
This has got to be changed. It is WRONG. Simply horribly wrong.
But if he'd lied and said he was his brother, they would have told him anything and everything. Stupid "laws" - extra-stupid Florida.

[this is really sickening]

Well, one of the reasons I had gotten married rather than co-habit with my former spousal unit was because of that law. (I'm straight, btw.) If one of us was in the hospital in dire condition, the other wouldn't be able to visit or see them--not "family." So we got married. (Romantic, huh? Didn't last anyway.) So it's not just a gay thing here, I think, though gays have no way to legalize it the way straights do. If they changed it, they'd have to acknowledge gays as having legal recourse. Yeah, right....
My husband and I were married in Toronto last June legally, sadly it isn't recognized here in the USA, though we live in Gay friendly Tucson. I would have been devastated to know from television that my husband had died.
